https://tinyurl.com/autumn-selfie-challenge !
[12:19] Kika Yongho: ~Photo Cafe’~ is collaborating with our friends from Thundr, who are calling for a seasonal Photo Contest! The rules of the contest are simple: take one to three photos representing an Autumn activity and using a prop, the Thundr phone, that you can collect here at our landing point for free (together with free poses and more gifts)!
[12:19] Kika Yongho: When you have your photo(s) ready, simply join the Thundr Flickr group and post them there (with right name and tag, as per rules) and that’s all! But why should you participate? For a start, because it will be fun to challenge yourself with a themed photo+prop! Then, cause there will be money prizes and beautiful trophies from Thundr! But most of all, because the winner will be on expo here at Photo Cafe’ for 3 months as our “In the Spot” Autumn photo!
[12:20] Kika Yongho: Note: if you want to have a copy of the contest rules with you, also, you can click the panel with the challenge poster at the landing point, or ask me in IM for a copy! We want to see your beautiful seasonal photos in the contest, to represent our ~Photo Cafe’~ Photographers out there! So, if you can, take and post your photo in the
and
[12:21] Kika Yongho: I can also tell you that we are gonna have a mega party on the 20th of October to celebrate the winner(s) at the end of it – just before our episode! Party will start at 9:30AM with the singer Janice Mills

until 12:00, when one of the trophy (and cash prize!) can be yours! Not to mention the “In The Spot” place of honor!
[12:22] Kika Yongho: But attention: the photo submissions ends on the 15th of October, so.. Get started with your photos! [12:24] Kika Yongho: This should be all for today. Did you find your photos for us to “grill” in the meantime? You have a few more seconds while our beautiful host Josephine will be starting our episode with the usual info before the discussion is going to be opened! Ready, Josephine? Here you go, I am roger and out!
[12:25] Josephine Delvalle: Dear photographers and artists, welcome to a new round of our biweekly discussions.
[12:25] Josephine Delvalle: Today there is (yeaaahhh) no theory from me to get you started, because we’re getting ‘practical’ today.
[12:26] Josephine Delvalle: The last time we talked about feedback and realized that the topic is a little bigger than our discussion hour. So we could only talk about the side of the feedback recipient, how does it feel to receive feedback in different situations.
[12:26] Josephine Delvalle: We couldn’t even begin to shed light on the feedback provider’s side.
[12:26] Josephine Delvalle: Yes, and there was a need to show our own photo sand get feedback, but we were already past our time.
[12:27] Josephine Delvalle: That’s why we want to get practical today.
[12:27] Josephine Delvalle: As always: stay kind and helpful and stick to the discussion rules
[12:28] Josephine Delvalle: and give me a ‘done’ when done
[12:28] Josephine Delvalle: So: ‘let’s get practical and let me hear your photo talk’
[12:28] Josephine Delvalle: Has anyone brought a photo she/he would like to discuss?
[12:29] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): c
[12:29] Josephine Delvalle: Laurent, you have a photo for us?
[12:29] Unca Rei (unca.avro): c
[12:30] A. (ava.darkheart): c
[12:30] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): Yes, a real life studio shot.
[12:30] Josephine Delvalle: Please take a moment to let the photo ‘speak’ to you/to us.
[12:30] Josephine Delvalle: and Laurent wait a moment before you start explaining why you show us your photo.
[12:31] Josephine Delvalle: Let the photo talk then I would like to ask the photographer to tell us what story the picture tells and what message he wants to give. Then we can see how accurately the statement resonated with us. Does anyone have an idea how to convey the message even better?
[12:32] Josephine Delvalle: Laurent, what story do you wish to tell with the photo?
[12:35] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): This is an attempt at redoing a series I did in B/W. The series is not really with any message specifically, it’s more about the aesthetic. The reason I’m not happy with this shot is that I feel like it’s ok, but it doesn’t “pack a punch” – while I did press the shutter cause I was convinced it would. It’s one of those shots/series that you just don’t know if you’re making them either better or worse by trying to make small changes. This is about 90% how it was on the camera – I toned it down a bit and made the black curve darker so you don’t see the creases in the background.
[12:36] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): And I’m happy to have you tear it apart and see what I can learn from it. Thanks 🙂 Done.
[12:37] Kika Yongho: c
[12:37] Josephine Delvalle: hopefully nobody will try to tear it apart 🙂
[12:37] Moki Yuitza: c
[12:38] Josephine Delvalle: Lets see: does it hit the point for you, dear photographers? Unca, your turn.
[12:40] Unca Rei (unca.avro): I am always enraged by topless shots. Not the shots themselves, but societies reaction to them. As if you could damage your psyche by looking at them.
[12:41] Unca Rei (unca.avro): This one is proud, muscular, and graceful, it should be prominently displayed as an expression of female identity in some public place, yet you would get banned if you posted it on facebook. Done
[12:42] Josephine Delvalle: Thank You Unca, and we go with Ava
[12:44] A. (ava.darkheart): Well first i wanted comment on feedback from the previous discussion. Usually to make a constructive feedback, we need to use the triptych Fact-incidence-improvement to stay in an active and positive discussion… but now that Laurent showed his picture, i’ll make my comment about that too
[12:46] Josephine Delvalle: Lets keep it practical, Ava 🙂
[12:47] A. (ava.darkheart): And so if i analyse what Laurent said, it’s like there are two parts to this picture, the aesthetic and dreamlike part, and the second part with the trousers. It’s like there are two different worlds colliding, it’s not about the exposure or contrast, but ultimately, that can be a great theme for some series. done i think
[12:48] Josephine Delvalle: Thank You Ava, go, Kika, go
[12:48] Kika Yongho: I am not a pro but my impression looking at your photo, Laurent, is that is missing some space on top of the model, to get the “punch”. Looking at it is now, the movement upwards looks a bit forced in the photo frame and it doesn’t explode above as I would expect. I would leave some more room above, basically. 😀 Other than that, the photo can’t be thorn apart cause is really well made, bravo! Done 🙂
[12:49] Josephine Delvalle: Thank You, Kika and we go with, Moki
[12:49] Moki Yuitza: I particularly appreciate this kind of images, high contrast and focus on aesthetics… that said, imho the image lacks a bit of balance. those who know me know that I have an obsession for balance, and in this image something doesn’t add up…
[12:50] Moki Yuitza: specifically, the balance between light and dark is shifted to the right, and probably the fact that you emphasized the dark, has broken the lines of the human body into many short segments… it probably would have been more effective if a single fluid line had been perceived… that said, you can clearly see the professionalism here… Bravo. Done
[12:52] Josephine Delvalle: Thank You Moki
[12:52] Josephine Delvalle: Usually I don’t take part … but here, I feel the same as Moki
[12:53] Josephine Delvalle: just a small note about your really good photo. My first glance fell on the white trousers. Then I had to consciously ‘look for’ the rest.
The white trousers stand out due to the color contrast. But maybe that was intentional?
[12:53] Josephine Delvalle: Laurent, did we help? You have the final stage
[12:54] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): Thank you all for the comments. I’m happy you didn’t make Josephine toss it into the ocean. Unca’s words hit real close to one of the main reasons behind the trousers – I’m a nude photographer, and have been so for 25 years – but it’s much harder to promote my work now as though there are more ways of promoting there are even more ways of censorship. However; that’s a whole other discussion.
I was afraid zooming out would make it more of a beam-me-up picture, but there’s definitely not a lot of negative space on the image – which might have just been what was needed. Moki is indeed right that the balance is off – it’s tricky making these images because Sofia is very strong, but also can’t hold these kind of poses for more than a few moments (And she’s been already at it for 2 hours or so). But I will definitely check. This model will be back in my studio in a few weeks, and I’ll happily try again with your feedback. Thank you all! Done
[12:57] Unca Rei (unca.avro): Superb work
[12:57] Josephine Delvalle: Thank You Laurent to show us your amazing photo … and …. it needs a bit of bravery to stand here and say: ok, Lions, eat me
[12:57] Josephine Delvalle: Thank you to you all for your comments.
[12:58] Laurent Philippe (laurentphilippephoto): Oh, I got lots of sh*t pictures if you ever need something to talk about 😀 Thank you!
[12:58] Josephine Delvalle: ok, we count on you 😉
[12:58] Josephine Delvalle: Next episode #64 will be on October the 20th: special party starting at 9:30AM with live singer Janice and DJ set of BookaB. We will have the winners of Thundr photo contest announcement and then the sequel of the last discussion: “Feed Them Feedback!”
[12:58] Josephine Delvalle: Don’t miss Janice Mills – she is a really good singer
[12:59] Josephine Delvalle: Hope to see you all again in 2 weeks. Stay safe and enjoy autumn!
