[The following Episode #34 will be on:
6th of May 2023]
[12:12] Kika Yongho: Hello Photographers, and welcome all to a new episode of our Photo Cafe’ #34 * SPECIAL *! We had a great dance, just ended with our beautiful DJs Bee and Roy, who we thank again and again and again for the great party!
[12:12] Kika Yongho: Today’s news is very short: two items on my list.. Ready?
[12:13] Kika Yongho: First one: we are gonna reprise the workshops! Yay! But with a new formula: they will be short workshops of 40-50 minutes, on any of the photography and arty related topics! So if you have a skill, expertise or knowledge that you would like to share with your photographers friends.. IM me and we will arrange your workshop!
[12:13] Kika Yongho: Second topic: do you have an expo, photo contest, or other artistic event to promote amongst your fellow photographers? Well, get your landmarks or info ready because.. at the end of this episode we will reserve 10 minutes for art promotion!
[12:14] Kika Yongho: And this is all for now! I pass the mic to our Duraya for this.. “Photo BBQ” to come! Yumm yumm! Please, Duraya, I am roger and out!
[12:14] Duraya: Hello everyone and welcome to a very exciting and hopefully fruitful discussion: the spring photo BBQ! Let’s get started!
[12:17] Duraya: There are so many rules and technical skills you can resort to when taking pictures but in the end – at least for me – it’s a feeling of‚ rightness‘ that makes you decide you are done with an image.
[12:17] Duraya: But sometimes it is like‚ great, really great, but …‘ and you have no clue how to get to that point where it feels completely right.
[12:18] Duraya: Our fellow photographers are qualified and capable to assist you finding the answer, that’s what we really want to do – support each other!
[12:19] Duraya: We asked you to bring one or two examples of your work you would love to get feedback on.
[12:19] Duraya: As you see, today’s easel behind me is emitting hearts as a reminder to give this feedback respecting and valuing the work itself, concentrating on hints for possible improvement.
[12:20] Duraya: And the hearts also remind those receiving feedback to accept these hints as efforts to support them and nothing else. So wo dares?
[12:21] Moonsoul Kiyori: Q
[12:21] Duraya: yes Moonsoul
[12:21] Moonsoul Kiyori: may I start?
[12:22] Duraya: sure, let me just explain how we will do it
[12:22] Duraya: Please drag the image to the easel and explain in a few words what is disturbing you.
[12:22] Duraya: And for those giving feedback ask yourself:
“what is that doesn’t feel completely right”
“can I identify any disturbing elements”
“what would I do differently”
[12:23] Duraya: here we go Moonsoul first!
[12:28] Duraya: okay, so what is your concern about it?
[12:28] Moonsoul Kiyori: I feel that something is not good. I want the avatar’s back like that
[12:29] Moonsoul Kiyori: I am wondering if there is a lot on this photo. this blue gaz pump for example, or if the sky is too boring. Done
[12:29] Duraya: let’s see what our fellow photographers think about it, any suggestions?
[12:30] Moki Yuitza: q
[12:30] Duraya: yes Moki
[12:30] Moki Yuitza: question for Moonsoul: in your intentions, what would be the focal point in your photo?
[12:30] Moonsoul Kiyori: I think the avatar but thats actually a good question because there is no focus now that I see
[12:31] DaneAlbion: c
[12:31] Duraya: yes Dane
[12:31] Moki Yuitza: that is for me, yes, i see the bird as the focal point, maybe this could be the problem in your feeling about the image. Done
[12:32] Kika Yongho: c
[12:32] DaneAlbion: i find my eye is drawn to the pelican and then down towards the wooden uprights. If the AV was the intended focal point then perhaps there is a little too much in the frame. Done
[12:33] Duraya: thanks, and Kika please
[12:33] Kika Yongho: I think Moki hit the spot but for me the gas pump is to blame cause it draws much my attention. Other than that the sky is good, I like the photo. done
[12:34] Duraya: thank you Kika
[12:34] DaneAlbion: c
[12:35] Duraya: I love how the ava, the gas pump and the pelican turn their back on us – and yes – Moki got the eye, did that help you?
[12:35] Duraya: Dane wants to add something
[12:35] Moonsoul Kiyori: a lot, I see now what is confusing
[12:36] DaneAlbion: by placing my hand over a third of the pic, either right or left its actually two good pictures in one. Done
[12:37] Duraya: that’s economic, thank you all!
[12:37] Duraya: so who else brought a picture?
[12:38] Moki Yuitza: i found some, if i can
[12:41] Moki Yuitza: ok, so..it should express a loving embrace, i love the light on the male arm and the faces of both.
[12:41] Moki Yuitza: but there is something that makes me feel it as…. unbalanced. done
[12:41] Moonsoul Kiyori: c
[12:41] Kika Yongho: c
[12:42] Duraya: Moonsoul you start please
[12:43] Moonsoul Kiyori: I don’t see something wrong here. I think you managed to show the loving embrace. The bodies and the heads are placed in a way that makes that very visible. Done
[12:43] Duraya: thank you and Kika please
[12:44] Kika Yongho: I think the characters’ viewed from the back and the lines of the arms and backs, point the “movement” somehow backwards rather than forward and for me the unbalance you feel is maybe given by that: it feels they are going backwards instead of forward.. That’s what it feels to me. But is really being picky here: the photo is great: embrace Titanic style. Done
[12:44] DaneAlbion: c
[12:45] Duraya: thank you Kika, Dane now please
[12:45] Moonsoul Kiyori: q
[12:46] DaneAlbion: this is probably very picky…not like me at all…but there is a very bright spot on top of the mans shoulder which is distracting and pulls the eye away, but it is a very beautiful image. Done
[12:47] Duraya: thank you, and you have a question Moonsoul
[12:47] Moonsoul Kiyori: Did you achieve this light with projectors? if I may ask?
[12:48] Moki Yuitza: yes, Moonsoul, usually i make “studio” photos using both environment and projectors, in this case, i used both
[12:49] Moki Yuitza: the cool light is from environment, the warm one is a projector
[12:49] Moonsoul Kiyori: thank you
[12:49] Kapaan: c
[12:49] Duraya: yes Kapaan 🙂
[12:50] Kapaan: I think the reason the picture looks out of balance is mainly due to the horizon line. Your eye is attempting to see as things are in RL. That horizon indicates you are falling over. The photo is other wise technically great. Done
[12:51] Duraya: thank you Kapaan, did that help Moki?
[12:52] Moki Yuitza: a lot, especially Kapaan…. i think he hits the point, there are two lines that interfere, arms and the horizon
[12:52] Moki Yuitza: thank you all
[12:53] Duraya: okay – I got one more from Cana
[12:55] CANA (canaris.restless): Okay, the roses bother me – I am not certain how to lighten the interior of the flowers.
[12:55] Kika Yongho: c
[12:56] Duraya: yes Kika
[12:56] Kika Yongho: Maybe using body lights Cana? You can attach lights to any body part so to enlighten elements of the photo! Done
[12:56] Moonsoul Kiyori: c
[12:56] Moki Yuitza: c
[12:57] Duraya: and Moonsoul is next, thanks Kika
[12:57] Moonsoul Kiyori: I will add to Kika’s comment. Projectors would work too. with soft light and spotted on the flowers. Done
[12:58] Duraya: thank you
[12:58] CANA (canaris.restless): q.
[12:58] Duraya: and Moki please
[12:59] Moki Yuitza: if the roses are mod, you could light the interior working on the textures
[13:00] Moki Yuitza: or, if they are not, you could add little lights into each rose, but then you should work on light parameters to not interfere with the other lights you are using for shooting
[13:00] Moki Yuitza: mainly reducing the radius. Done
[13:00] Duraya: Moki – sounds like a workshop idea
[13:01] Moki Yuitza: ok, i’m in
[13:01] Duraya: did that help Cana?
[13:01] Kapaan: c
[13:02] CANA (canaris.restless): yes, they aren’t mods and so i had difficulty trying to figure out how to lighten them. Projectors were adding larger lights and so I didn’t know i could alter parameters to be so precise
[13:03] CANA (canaris.restless): since the roses are connected and different shapes. Done
[13:03] Duraya: thanks
[13:03] Duraya: Kapaan please and then we do the promotions if there are any
[13:04] Kapaan: Low key images as really hard to get right. I think this is a fantastic considering the serious technical considerations. I do think that converting this in BW and lightening the image overall and potentially pop any red colours would make this portrait stand out. Another small thing that could enhance the image greatly is having the model look straight at the viewer. Done
[13:04] Duraya: thank you Kapaan
[13:05] Duraya: so who has ongoing exhibitions to share or other announcements for us?
[13:05] Moonsoul Kiyori: I have one
[13:05] Duraya: go ahead please
[13:06] Moonsoul Kiyori: Rainbow Gallery opening on Monday at 1pm
[13:06] Moonsoul Kiyori: Rainbow Painters actually

[13:06] Moonsoul Kiyori: this is the LM
[13:06] Duraya: ah yes – I’ll be there for sure!
[13:07] CANA (canaris.restless): C
[13:07] Duraya: Cana please
[13:08] CANA (canaris.restless): I have an art exhibit on graffiti at the Art Experience Gallery

[13:13] Duraya: thanks Cana
[13:14] Duraya: I enjoyed today’s BBQ a lot and if I had a say in it I would like to do it again in the near future…oh – I have a say in it, quarter say at least 🙂
[13:14] Duraya: thank you all for participating and hopefully see you in a fortnight latest!
