[11:08] Duraya Resident: Hello and welcome everyone to Episode #19 of our bi-weekly Photo Cafe!
[11:09] Duraya Resident: I am excited because we will take the next step towards ‚getting to know each other by sharing art‘- this time themed ‘Black and White’!
[11:09] Duraya Resident: Again, we received a large number of great pictures – you see them displayed around the discussion space!
[11:10] Duraya Resident: But first Kika with news and information! Kika your turn 🙂
[11:10] Kika Yongho: Hello Photographer friends!
We started in the month of April a new special recurrent Expo, called “In The Spot”! It is a quarterly display of one single seasonal photo, and we after Spring it is time for.. Summer!
[11:10] Kika Yongho: Do you remember how does this recurrent expo works? We will display every 3 months a photo representing the current ongoing season, according to the current expo schedule:
Spring = April->June
Summer = July->September
Autumn = October->December
Winter = January->March
We will request (or you can volunteer!) a month before for the next season’s photo, that will be displayed for 3 months on the sim.
[11:12] Kika Yongho: The season’s photographer is also encouraged to post the photo in Photo Cafe’ Flickr group:
that has been created to display Photo Cafe’ related photos: taken here or related to our contests/seasonal expo. You can use [Photo Cafe’] in title or description, to facilitate the Administrators in the approval process for our group!
[11:12] Kika Yongho: But… Summer! Who will be our Summer photographer for the months of July->September? This is your chance, photographers, to volunteer spontaneously before we volunteer one of you forcefully! LOL! Just kidding of course.. Or not? 😉 Please IM me to arrange the details starting.. NOW! The faster will be our photographer for the quarter!
[11:14] Duraya: Before we start discussing the images – as some might need to leave early and I don’t know how long the discussion will go I have to announce something:
[11:14] Duraya: Onceagain invites us to display our work in her gallery! Thank you Onceagain!
[11:15] Duraya: This is a great opportunity to show interested friends what we are doing.
[11:15] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): It will be a sort of Open call for B&W photos, so add yours to Onceagain art gallery group
[11:15] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): to have the chance to be on show 🙂
[11:15] Duraya: These pictures always take some time and effort. They deserve to be shown!
[11:16] Violette (violette.rembrandt): can we add several?
[11:16] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): I reserve the right to choose 🙂
[11:16] Duraya: So everyone who wants their picture shown please do as Once instructed, I will remind you before we finish!
[11:16] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): is open to all, soon I’ll put an ad on Flickr 🙂
[11:16] Alex Amore: where is the location of that group?
[11:18] Duraya: Soooo – the images!
[11:19] Duraya: for everyone new – please type c in local for comment, q for question and say done when you are finished
[11:20] Duraya: Let us hear about your experiences with the BW images you took please. How did it go? Was it easy? Hard? Did you like the challenge? How did you shoot your picture? Did you edit?
[11:21] Moki Yuitza: c
[11:22] Prins (skylog): c
[11:22] Duraya: yes Moki, nice of you to start 🙂
[11:22] Moki Yuitza: thank you Duraya >^͜^<
[11:23] Moki Yuitza: so… last time i said that for me B/W is a sort of fundamental in photography… i think to BW images as a sort of “drawings”
[11:23] Moki Yuitza: so, i used this opportunity to try to take a photo to show this concept
[11:24] Moki Yuitza: and to break my war against landscapes °͜°
[11:25] Moki Yuitza: i simply took it in my sim, i was looking for a simple shape, and i thought that that bridge and those white elements were graphically adapt to this concept
[11:26] Moki Yuitza: used a grey windlight, and DoF, a bit of editing to crop it
[11:26] Moki Yuitza: done °͜°
[11:26] Duraya: thank you!
[11:27] Duraya: Prins, your turn
[11:27] Prins (skylog): I had plan to make a few versions of a black and white image, but couldn’t get it right in sl, so I could not make a native born black and white image. When they made black and white movies, Oliver and Hardy were wearing strange colored cloth to make the right black to white nuances.
So, when they started to color these movies, some tried to protect the artist for they had a reason to wear a purple jacket and pink shoes. Another story.
Step one in transforming this image was an accident, looking in ways to go from color to black and white. Which brought us here and there is a lot of nuances.
And then I made it black and white.
Done
[11:28] Alex Amore: c
[11:29] Duraya: thank you Prins 🙂
[11:29] Duraya: Alex you are next please write your comment
[11:29] Alex Amore: It was fun and impulsive for me. I was not planning to take my black and white shot at that moment, but when i saw the arms in the water, i saw the potential. As i was setting up the shot, my partner showed up and i caught us hugging in the distance and i knew that was the shot It made a nice story. I used the B/W filter in Phototools and I did do some editing in photoshop to remove unwanted things and up the contrast.
[11:29] Alex Amore: done
[11:30] Duraya: thank you
[11:31] Duraya: no one on my list yet
[11:32] Duraya: but we can look at Andrew’s pic meanwhile
[11:33] Duraya: so although Andrew isn’t present his wooden avatar is – at least in the image
[11:35] Duraya: I would have asked him why he likes to mirror people’s poses – he frequently does
[11:35] Duraya: (the psychologist speaking)
[11:36] Kika Yongho: q
[11:36] Duraya: yes Kika
[11:36] Kika Yongho: I have a question for the psychologist about Andrew’s photo.. What does it indicate when one is mirroring poses? 😛
[11:37] Jaminda Moon (jaminda): c
[11:37] Michiel Bechir: c
[11:38] Duraya: we do that subconsciously to appear friendly – I use it to make people aware of something
[11:38] Duraya: Jaminda you are next on my list
[11:39] Jaminda Moon (jaminda): Mine is a poster I made for a project I am going to be involved with soon called Art we real? Exploring a lot of interesting themes about our humanity and various philosophical theories on the subject. It is edited obviously and I was curious how it would look in black and white …I may do a color version too but I quite like how it looks as it is…done
[11:40] Kika Yongho: c
[11:40] Duraya: thank you Jaminda
[11:42] Duraya: and – I have Michiel on my list now
[11:42] Michiel Bechir: I have an answer to the earlier question of Kika about the mirroring of Alex…it has to do with symmetry, i think. The wiki says: It states that people tend to perceive objects as coherent wholes organized around a center point; this is particularly evident when the objects involve unconnected regions bounded by borders. Also called law (or principle) of symmetry.
[11:42] Michiel Bechir: done
[11:43] Duraya: thank you
[11:43] Duraya: and Kika is next please
[11:44] Kika Yongho: Thank you! About my photo, I tried to get a native B/W in Firestorm, as recommended by a friend. Usually I make a photo B/W in post-production, editing it and desaturating it or using some specific filter. This time I tried to “see in B/W” as I was shooting, and try and make the photo more “dramatic”. As composition I selected indeed an expressive pose from the lounge chair and a simple plain “flat” background to keep the focus on the main subject.
I did not add lights but used a very bright EEP in the open air (if anyone is interested is Phototools – Absinthe light, one of my favorite for working) that gave the right light and shadows, just adjusting the usual settings: sun, gamma, etc.
In post-production I simply added a bit more contrast to enhance the photo, but it wasn’t a major editing this time. I think this is all about my picture. Done!
[11:45] Duraya: Thank you Kika
[11:45] DaneAlbion: c
[11:47] Duraya: Dane.
[11:47] DaneAlbion: I used Film Noir as a starting point and I was thinking about the comment made during the black and white discussion, about how sometimes B&W is just the right tool for what you want to do. I don’t think this character, lurking in the shadows like that would like quite so sinister in colour.
I used EEP Phototools No Light, some red lighting to darken the blacks and I did a bit of editing in GIMP, mainly to add a vignette to increase the darkness.
[11:48] DaneAlbion: done
[11:49] Duraya: yes – he looks kind of dangerous thank you Dane 🙂
[11:49] Elfi Siemens: yeah, film noir was the first thing that came to mind, very well done 😀
[11:49] Duraya: uhm – may I ask what film noir is?
[11:49] Elfi Siemens: a movie genre, b/w as you can guess, The Night Of The Hunter” my favorite one
[11:50] DaneAlbion: often crime drama
[11:50] Duraya: it sounded like a sophisticated tool in SL I failed to discover
[11:50] Duraya: I promise I will watch more movies 🙂
[11:50] Kika Yongho: c
[11:50] Violette (violette.rembrandt): c
[11:50] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): c
[11:51] Duraya: Kika you are next
[11:51] Kika Yongho: Just to say that no one IMed me yet about the Summer photo to take, and that you have ~10 minutes before I will select one volunteer myself 😀 Done!
[11:52] Violette (violette.rembrandt): so scary
[11:52] Kika Yongho: Don’t catch my attention or.. ^^
[11:52] Duraya: Violette your turn – and you are excused from volunteering as long as you type
[11:53] Violette (violette.rembrandt): Thank you Duraya ^^
I had this photo in mind for a long time and i thought it would do great with B&W theme.
I took it in BD and i edited a bit to make the black and white really black and white because it was a bit too greyish to my taste and i thought this photo needed this intensity of darkness and light as it was to express something i was feeling. the particles are from an outfit and i thought it would give some depth to this photo because it was only a black backdrop ^^
I’m quite happy on how it tuned out + it only took me 4 hours XD ahahaha.
[11:53] Violette (violette.rembrandt) coughs
[11:54] Violette (violette.rembrandt): done ^^
[11:54] Duraya: congrats on your speed!
[11:54] Duraya: onceagain will you speak please 🙂
[11:54] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): I find that your photo is very interesting, Dane, good job and Violette… love your shot
[11:55] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): I don’t have much to say .. my black and white photos are generally different from this one shown here, but I’ve had that in mind for a while so I just did it.
However, I think it is a good example of a photo in BW, I would say typical of street photography, there is a fairly complete range of grays.
[11:55] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): done
[11:56] Michiel Bechir: it is a lovely composition Onceagain
[11:57] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): Thank you Michiel 🙂
[11:57] Elfi Siemens: once’s pic is a good example why b/w is so great for architecture
[11:57] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): agree
[11:57] onceagain (manoji.yachvili): perfect for street photography and architecture
[11:58] Kika Yongho: (2 minutes to volunteer or hear a scream)
[12:00] Duraya: Perfect time to remind you all: Please don’t forget: everyone who wants their picture shown add yours to Onceagain art gallery group!
[12:03] Duraya: do we have someone for the picture Kika?
[12:03] Kika Yongho: You are all curious to know who’s the artist?
[12:03] Kika Yongho: Someone framed Michiel .. Dunno who was 😀
[12:03] Duraya: success!!!
[12:04] Duraya: thanks everyone for the discussion.
[12:04] Duraya: Next cafe will be on Saturday, the 25th of June, 2022 – with a pleasant surprise, I guarantee!!!!!
